UK, September 2023 – With increasing energy costs and a greater consciousness for greener operations across the globe, Citadines Barbican Apart’hotel, one of the many properties within The Ascott Limited (Ascott), has successfully installed a Room Energy Management System (REMS) provided by ESDLUK, a subsidiary of Malta based company SENS Innovation Group Ltd.

The 129-bedroom aparthotel is now fully equipped with the green-IOT tech-based system that controls the Air Conditioning infrastructure by automatically switching on or off, depending on whether windows or doors are left open. This efficient management of energy across the property will lead to a £1.51 daily saving based on a Kwh rate of £0.285p, meaning a potential annual saving of £71,000, with a return on investment of just 13 months. It will also potentially reduce CO2 emissions by up to 65,448kg* tons per year.

More importantly however, the flexibility and retrofit solutions offered by the SENS system installation ensured the apart’hotel was able to remain fully operational throughout the three-week installation period, with absolute minimum disruption to operations or its guests.
Today, the property can monitor energy consumption and savings on a daily basis thanks to the REACH Platform that is provided as part of the solution. This platform provides visibility to engineers, allowing them to control the system and make adaptations accordingly, whilst providing insights to management for better decision making.

“It’s been an absolute privilege to have been given the opportunity to partner with Ascott and share our solutions in a joint effort towards increasing sustainability efforts and reducing the Group’s footprint with the consequential positive impact on their cost base,” said Scott Carter, Managing Director, ESDL UK. “We very much look forward to expanding our solution to the other properties within the Group,” he added.

Frédéric Carré, regional general manager of UK, Belgium, Germany, Spain and Georgia at The Ascott Limited, comments: “We are pleased to be partnering with EDSL UK in order to reduce our carbon footprint across our portfolio in the UK. By using the room management system, we will not only make monetary savings but also reduce our energy consumption and run our buildings more efficiently.

“This is one of many sustainable initiatives, The Ascott is undertaking to improve its environmental impact across its building portfolio and will contribute to the wider Group’s effort to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, as part of its ESG Strategy.”

The Ascott Limited, a lodgings business unit wholly owned by CapitaLand Investment, headquartered in Singapore with over 930 properties across the globe, has a very strong sustainability culture. The scope for greener and more sustainable actions, with the consequential costs saving across the two groups is significant. The Room Energy Management Systems were installed after a successful trial and will now be rolled out across all Ascott’s Citadines properties in London.

*According to DEFRA 265grams of CO2e is produced per kwh, the potential savings for the Barbican Hotel arebased upon £1.50 / Room / Day, this translates to 5.26kwh/day which equates to 1.39kg CO2e / room/ day. Overa year with 129 rooms at the Hotel the potential total CO2 emissions saved would be in the region of 65,448.00CO2e.
